Higher Education Engagement
New Jersey Minority Educational Development (NJ MED), a Non-Governmental member of the United Nations’ Economic and Social Council, is committed to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their set 17 Global Goals, led by the UN.
With the establishment of NJ MED’s World Top 20 Project. Whose mission is to ensure every child on the planet has an opportunity to reach their full potential, with access to quality education in a safe and nurturing environment.
To accomplish its mission and in support of the SDGs, NJ MED will seek partnerships with other NGOs, and work with Higher Education Institutions (Colleges and Universities) that are participating in two Higher Education Initiatives – Higher Education Sustainability Initiative (HESI) and Higher Education and Research for Sustainable Development (HESD), to address 4 SDGs Goals: Goal 4, Goal 11, Goal 5, and Goal 10.
Higher Education Initiatives
Two educational international initiatives – Higher Education Sustainability Initiative (HESI) and Higher Education and Research for Sustainable Development (HESD) – are part of the SDGs project towards accomplishing Goal 4 and several other related Goals.
The major focus of HESI is to develop research in support of the SDGs with the support of United Nation entities (UNESCO, Global Compact, Environment Programme (UNEP), United Nations University (UNU), and the Economic and Social Affairs Department). To ask University around the world to take a leaders role, by signing a declaration emphasising the special responsibility of higher education institutions to provide leadership on education for sustainable development.
To date, the HESI , with their 304 members; main focus has been on Goal 4, with support towards Goals 13, 7, 15 , 12, 17, 11, 16, 6, 14, 9, 2 and 5.
The HESD serves as a global portal tool developed by the International Association of Universities; it provides access to actions and initiatives developed around the world by Higher Educational Institutions to promote sustainability. To date, they track 378 Universities and Colleges.
The HESD main focus is in support of SDGs Goal 4, 11 and 13.
